Two weeks ago, Sadie and I packed a bag full of supplies and set off to the nearest park. This is us working our way through a crate of beer, two tubs of hummus (one normal, one beetroot(!)) and reading @elizabeth_gilbert_writer ‘s new novel, City of Girls. Because I live in Germany, she lives in Vietnam, and we both live on limited budgets, we only get see each other once a year. For those few days of togetherness, we take inspiration from Liz’s time in Italy, and live for the pursuit of pleasure. This year, we organised it so that we’d each have a copy of City of Girls. This was massive for us because we’ve both read all her books. We both read Big Magic at university, we’ve poured over her interviews and her talks, we’ve sat on the steps of a (really grimy) railway station until 2am drinking from a bottle of cheap wine and talking about her and her writing - but we’ve never actually read her at the same time - let alone together. It’s never hard to find happiness when the two of us are together. This is partly because we can make each other nearly vomit with laughter within seconds, and partly because every day of togetherness, there’s a new recipe for joy that’s delivered to us perfected. I don’t feel like I’m explaining this very well, so here’s an example. Here’s this day’s: Joy is books set in 1940s New York. Joy is ‘omg I LOVED that line, did you love that line? Where’s the bottle opener? Are you on beer 2 or beer 3?’ Joy is loving other women, celebrating other women, lying back on a picnic blanket, eating crisps and gushing about their art.
